BinHexDec

A programmer's calculator for iPhone and iPad.

BinHexDec works with binary, octal, decimal and hexadecimal values together, so you can enter a number in one base and see it in the others at the same time. Alongside ordinary arithmetic it provides the programmer-oriented operations you tend to reach for when working with bits, masks and memory addresses.

Status

BinHexDec is currently being resurrected and modernised for current versions of iOS. This page will be updated as that work progresses.

History

  1. Swift rewrite begins

    BinHexDec originally existed as an Objective-C project. In March 2016 I started rebuilding it in Swift, working through adaptive layout, number-base handling, overflow behaviour, signed/unsigned arithmetic experiments, shifts, rotates and complement operations.

  2. Version 1.0 released

    Development resumed in April 2017. The app was brought up to Swift 3, gained proper auto layout, AdMob, in-app purchases, history on iPad, copy-to-clipboard support, shifts, rotates and 1's/2's complement operations. It was submitted to Apple on 19 April 2017 and approved the following day.

  3. Modernised release

    After nearly ten years, BinHexDec was brought back into active development. The app was modernised for current Apple platforms while deliberately keeping the original calculator workflow and character intact.

2026 release notes

BinHexDec was originally built as a small programmer's calculator. This update focuses on preserving what made the app useful while bringing the implementation, privacy handling and platform support up to date.
